PrEP (Truvada) is a pill that people who do not have HIV take to prevent from becoming infected with HIV. If you are exposed to HIV through sexual behavior or drug use, PrEP prevents the virus from taking hold in your body.
PrEP has been shown to be over 90% effective in preventing HIV if it is taken every day. It is much less effective if it is not taken every day. PrEP can be combined with other prevention tools, such as condoms, to provide even greater protection against HIV. You’ll need to take an HIV test and some other tests before your doctor will prescribe PrEP. Then you’ll need to see your doctor regularly—about every 3 months—to continue to get your prescriptions. PrEP can be prescribed only by a health care provider, so talk to yours to find out if PrEP is the right HIV prevention strategy for you! If you need a referral to a NYC-based PrEP provider, we’re happy to help. |
PrEP is for people who are at higher risk of becoming infected with HIV, including people who are in an ongoing sexual relationship with an HIV+ partner.
PrEP is not partner-dependent – which means that it is an HIV prevention method that is under YOUR control! Truvada can cause minor, short-term side effects like headache or nausea. But these usually go away after a couple of weeks. PrEP has not been shown to cause long-term health problems. Truvada is covered by Medicaid and many private health insurance plans. Gilead, the company that makes Truvada, also has a Medication Assistance Program that can help pay for the drug if you don’t have insurance. Finally, New York State has an assistance program – PrEP-AP – that can pay for PrEP-related primary care and lab services used for regular HIV testing, counseling, sexually transmitted disease testing and treatment, and monitoring of side effects. |
